After coming to Crete, you can rent a car or use local bus
to approach Lasithi. For the road to Lasithi you follow the sign to Aghios
Nikolaos at Heraklio main road.
On your trip you find on your road the Hersonisos node where you pass and
continue straight ahead. You will also pass the Malia node where you also pass
straight ahead. Then you can see see the Selinari village where is a monastery o
Aghios Georgios. There you can make a 5 minutes break and watch wild birds fly
over your head. Then you continue for the heart of Lasithi, the Aghios Nikolaos.
The prefecture of Lassithi is located in the eastern part
of Crete. It borders on the west with the prefecture of Heraklion, while on the
other side it is bordered on the north by the Cretan Sea, on the east by the
Carpathian Sea and on the south by the Libyan Sea.
Although the terrain is mostly mountainous, with the Dikti mountain range
dominating the west of the prefecture, Lassithi has beautiful sandy beaches and
picturesque coves.
In Agios Nikolaos, the capital of the prefecture, you can admire the sights of
the city, and take a tour of its archeological sites.
In the center of the city is Lake Voulismeni, a small lagoon that the locals
refer to simply as "lake". Some legends say that the goddesses Athena and
Artemis bathed in its waters. Above the lake is a small pine park, from where
you can admire the view of the city.
A visit to VAI, the only palm forest in Europe, is a must. The combination of
the enchanting beach with the palm trees is reminiscent of an exotic landscape.
South of Ierapetra, is the island of Chrysi or "Gaidronisi", which has an
African character. Its all-gold sandy beach, its green-green cedars and several
traces of Minoan civilization, provoke and invite the visitor.
Other areas of the prefecture with attractions and archeological sites are:
Zakros, Kritsa, Milatos, Spinalonga.
In Lassithi you have the opportunity to choose from a variety of beautiful
beaches. Swim in the clear and crystal clear waters of Myrtos, Ierapetra, Agia
Fotia, Makrigialos, Pachia Ammos, Paleokastro, Ammoudara and Elounda, and
indulge in water sports.
Best places to stay and see Lasithi are Pachia Ammos and Monastiraki Village. To find Pachia Ammos and Monastiraki Village you have to continue from Aghios Nikolaos towards Ierapetra and meet these two villages on your road.
